The HPFP went last Friday :’( Now stuck on what to do. It’s sitting at a dealer two hours away from home. With an estimated repair cost of $3,164 including the extended warranty on HPFP, which takes $1,100. Now it really isn’t the best time to sell your VW either so resale value is shot. Don’t have the dough to cough up at the moment either.

Edit: More info.

Ouch, had you ever replaced it? The one on mine had been done at some point before I bought it. Now that I think about it I should probably check the cam follower sometime soon.

Sounds ominous...High Pressure Fuel something? My folks had a 2008 TFSI that died a couple times while driving, then caught fire a couple months later AFTER it was fixed. The dealer apologized profusely and VW gave them a few grand loyalty cash, but the service techs were like “Damned high-pressure injection systems always screw up in some way..."

Only the HPFP and not the parts associated with the mess :( Calling VWoA at some point today to poke the bear.

It was those things that I read about but never thought it’d happen to me.

For how many miles/KM did the original last?

Or it could be a case of the dealer not hiring competent techs and/or not bothering to train them.

One person I know took their TDI to have the timing belt changed at the local dealer... and they completely fucked up the job, set the timing completely wrong and the the engine self destructed after the work they did.

After that, he did some checking around and started taking his VWs to a local independent VW specialist... who apparently used to work at the crappy VW dealer and knew first hand about the lack of competence in that dealer’s service department.

Your car is also a bit newer than mine, so that’s understandable. I know they extended the warranty on mine for the HPFP and it was replaced under it. I am out of range for it now so hopefully mine holds up. Keep an eye on that cam follower too, I check mine ever couple of oil changes, they can eat up your cam. Mine was toast when I bought it so hopefully the cam isn’t too messed up.

damn $3000 for a fuel pump?

I presume that’s miles (unacceptable of that’s kilometers)... which isn’t too bad if it’s a 2L TDI. The 1.9L TDI HPFP typically lasts around 150,000 miles.

And on the bright side, the replacement is likely to be a better/improved version.

But even if it’s the same as the original, it will be years before you have to revisit the issue.

Holy shit that’s an expensive pump. If I still had my IDI F-250 a re-man Stanadyne DB2 distributor pump would cost about $400.

Kinja'd!!!

I realize the VW HPFP has to generate higher pressure, but still... damn.

I would normally agree with you in most cases, except for the slew of anecdotal issues people have had since the TSI/FSI engines came out. They're technically wonderful, but not very forgiving. Of course, my 30-year veteran local indy has also given me bad advice in the past, so it always helps to get multiple opinions.

What year car?

I had it done on my ‘13 TDI a few months back. They replaced everything that touches fuel.

For those (like me) that didn’t know:

HPFP = High Pressure Fuel Pump

Replace the unit, the injectors, fuel filter and flush the system. Waiting for them email me a PDF of it.

That’s absurd. Does it break apart into hundreds of tiny pieces and clog every injector? Why can’t you just replace the pump? I would get another estimate from an independent shop.

I had the HPFP go out on my ‘07 GTI at 118K miles... But VW extended the warranty to 120K miles (yay VW!) And I believe they did the same for the TDI HPFP’s of the same era... I think you’ll be fine.

When mine failed, I took it in to a dealer, and they said they had to disassemble to inspect to see if it would be warrantied... I was a worried to have them dig into the engine only to say “nope, not covered. And here’s a bill to put everything back together”

I called vw corp to talk with them, and they said what the dealer said, “we have to tear into first before we can ascertain if it’s gonna be warrantied....” But vw corporate called me back like 10 minutes later and said they’d just talked to the dealer and to give them a call etc etc...

So took the gti to the dealer, they had a loaner car waiting for me... and they ended up warrantying EVERYTHING. I was so appreciative of the love I was trying to find some work they could do that wasn’t warrantied.. but I had kept up on maintenance/timing belts etc... So I requested an oil change for lack of anything else.

When I went to pick up the car a week later, there was no charge- I inquired about the oil change (I wanted to pay for something since they were doing close to $4000 of warranty love for me).

“Nope, we had to drain the oil to do the work, VW picked up the oil change too.”

I think you’ll be fine—- I know it’s easier said than done, but don’t stress it.

Yes it breaks into tons of tiny pieces. This is a well documented problem. The HPFP goes and spits shavings into the fuel rail, the injectors, return line, fuel tank, BACK through all the electric pumps, and up to the fuel filter in the engine bay. Replacement of the entire fuel system is required.

I have a 2010 TDI Golf as well. Mine went at around 81k miles if memory serves me correctly. It was warrantied so I didn’t pay a dime. Also, VW extended the HPFP warranty through 120,000 miles so you should still be covered.
